THE BED was empty when I woke up. The first thing that crossed my mind was that it was only a dream. I rolled onto my stomach and wondered if it would come back if I fell asleep again soon enough, but my aching bladder wouldn’t let me try it out. I sat up in bed and rubbed my eyes, then went to the toilet while reflecting on the previous day.

The fragrance of Emil’s antiperspirant surrounded me when I stepped into the bathroom. The smell made me smile. I waited for the tiny voice in my head that used to scold me whenever I felt happy, but it seemed that part of my brain was still sleeping, and that made me feel odd—in a good way. I couldn’t remember when I was so at ease as I was that morning.

After I dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, I stared at my grinning reflection in the mirror for a while before I decided to head to the kitchen. After all, I didn’t need coffee to wake up and face the world—nothing could ruin my mood today.

A piece of paper from the notepad I kept next to the fridge to write down groceries lay in the middle of the dining table, carefully pinned down with a thermos cup so none of the writing was hidden under or behind it.
